Two days ago, a friend said to me "you need to buy a new purse and wallet". Like wtf?? lol when will I ever hear that from a man ever again in my life. Martin.. yes I did buy a new purse and wallet while I was at the mall.

To be fair, you had just discovered you'd killed (ok, maimed) your old one.
It wasn't a "you need a new one to go with *outfit*", but a "you need a new one because it no longer works fully".
So perfectly defensable!
